MONMOUTH School has organised a pop-up market to help pupils boost their communication and multilingual skills, writes Jack Simmonds.

Around 60 students from Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools spent a morning at the Blake Theatre running stores and selling a variety of produce in French, German and Spanish.

Dealing only in euros and conversing solely in those languages, pupils from years 5, 6 and 7 from The Grange, Monmouth School, HSMG, King Henry’s, Overmonnow and Monmouth Comprehensive came together to run stores.

The head of modern foreign languages at Monmouth School, Laura Parsons, organised the event: “These events bring languages to life and put them into context, the pupils are experimenting a real-life situation.”

“Hopefully they are learning a few words and gaining the ability to shop abroad, as well as developing a further interest in languages.”

In an ever-growing political climate, Mrs Parsons believe that language skills are especially important.

“British candidates need to have languages to be competitive and climb up the ladder," she said.

"Languages are really great for discovering confidence and communicating with people all over the world – they are skills which are important in most professions."
