PARENTS of children at an Abergavenny school have expressed their concerns over a school trip to London following the recent terrorist attacks.

Llantilio Pertholey Church in Wales Primary School holds an annual trip to the city where pupils can take in the sights of famous landmarks.

But the atrocities at Westminster and London Bridge, along with the stadium bombing in Manchester, has led some parents to express their fears to the school with the £150 trip just under a month away.

According to one mother who has a daughter at the school, Monmouthshire County Council have told the school that the trip is still safe “despite the MI5 website listing the terror threat as severe.”

She said: “Although the money is not an issue in this case, we have been told if our children to do not attend the school trip we will not receive any of the money back.

“It appears to us that they are more interested in the fact that they have been told it is safe, than the feelings of the parents and the children that are due to go on this trip, with many of our children expressing they do not want to attend the trip as they are scared.”

Another mother, who also has a daughter signed up for the trip, said: “I agree that nothing might happen but equally I’m really twitchy at the moment.

“Even the false alarms aren’t pleasant, police have to do their job and aren’t exactly going to ask people, and children, to love the premises politely.

“The trips the school put on really are amazing and educational, but at this time it just seems like we’re sending our children into the belly of the beast.”

A private meeting between those concerned and staff members took place on Tuesday afternoon.

Several changes have reportedly been made to the travel arrangements for the trip but some parents are still considering pulling their children from the trip.

According to a county council spokesman, the local authority will be unable to offer refunds as it is “unlikely travel insurance polices would cover any financial losses incurred.”

He added: “Schools may wish to offer refunds but these would be funded from the school’s budget. While a heightened state of vigilance continues to be required for all educational visits the authority is not currently advising that future travel should be cancelled. We have not received specific warnings from the government to cancel or postpone such trips.”

A county council representative was not able to attend Thursday’s meeting at Llantilio Pertholey Primary School.
