A CHEPSTOW-based charity has employed a talented local artist to be the first resident artist of its gallery.

Visitors to Monmouthshire Upcycle, which refurbishes donated household furniture for sale, will now have the chance to view artwork created by Sam Pritchard.

The 26-year-old, from Mathern, creates pieces ranging from illustrations to sculptures, while also creating bespoke artworks on request. The former Cardiff Metropolitan University student has a particular interest in creating works based on fantasy and local folklore.

Monmouthshire Upcycle receives a small commission from each of the pieces sold by Mr Pritchard who, despite starting the job only last week, has found it “very rewarding”.

He said: “It’s been really positive to have people coming in and viewing the work, and it’s always good to support a local charity. The gallery also helps to promote the work of local artists so it’s good to give everyone some exposure.”

Mr Pritchard had been approached for the role by Kris Vaughan-Adkins, the charity’s deputy project manager and his former schoolmate.

“The gallery came with the building and three months ago we decided to make use of it,” said Mr Vaughan-Adkins, who studied the same illustration degree as Mr Pritchard.

“Sam is very talented, and having him here brings people who wouldn’t come otherwise, so it benefits him and the project.”

The charity was formed last year as a branch of a project which started in the Forest of Dean. Alongside the upcycling, it also provides training opportunities for young people and those with disabilities.
