THOUSANDS of people flocked to Caldicot Castle today to learn more about the emergency services.

The annual 999 Emergency Services Day saw around 4,000 people enjoy the day out organised by the Caldicot Town Team. Representatives from Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service as well as the Welsh Ambulance Service were on hand to answer questions from the public.

Visitors could also take a look at a helicopter and other emergency services vehicles.

Aaron Reeks, of Caldicot Town Team, said the day had been “fantastic”.

He said: “We decided to set up 999 Emergency Services Day because we thought people needed to know more about them.

“This year’s event has been a huge success. This year we have had more people here and a greater number of emergency services coming for the day.”

He added: “It’s a free event and there’s so many ways people can learn about our emergency services.

“They could be sat in an ambulance or just ask the staff questions to learn more.”

Jessie Morgan, from Usk, said she had come to the event for her son to learn more.

She said: “My seven-year-old is always asking questions about the ambulance service. That’s why we’re here.

“He loved going inside the helicopter and turning on the ambulance siren.”
