A BENCH in memory has been unveiled at a Monmouthshire football club in memory of a former player and supporter who died suddenly at 33.

The marble memorial bench at the side of the pitch will pay tribute to Jonathan Pike who had his senior career at Welsh League club Undy Athletic cut short when died in 2015.

Since his death friends and family began an annual memorial match held at the club and raised money for a permanent memorial to be placed at the club.

Undy Chairman Rob Lynch said: “This is a fitting tribute for Jon, as he was a regular supporter once he was unable to play any longer.

"Anyone who knew him will know any tribute would have had to have been near a pitch."

Over the weekend, a large crowd - including many of Mr Pike's, friends and former team mates - were there to see the launch at the Undy clubs's clash with Llanelli Town.

First team manager Laurence Owen and Llanelli star and former Swansea City legend, Lee Trundle, took part in the unveiling ceremony at Undy's Causeway ground.

As previously reported, Mr Pike had already recovered from two serious incidents, including being hit by a car in Undy in April 2002 which left him with a severe brain injury meaning he could not live independently or continue his studies.

Before that, he had walked away from another devastating road collision that claimed the life of another man.

When the much-loved figure was found dead at an address on New Road, the news sent grief through the town and surrounding areas.

An inquest into his death at Newport Coroners Court last year determined he died of natural causes with a pathologist stating he could have died from a terminal seizure.

His family, speaking at the time, said: "Adored by all who knew him. Tender, kind, generous, devoted to family and friends, of whom there were hundreds.

"So many traumas in his life overcome each time with a will and determination that was phenomenal. An inspiration to everyone around him.

“The family are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support and the world is a much sadder place without him. Heaven has truly gained a hero.”

Mr Lynch added: "It was right that we held the unveiling on a day when one of the biggest clubs in South Wales were visiting and we’d like to place on record our sincere thanks to Llanelli town and especially Lee Trundle for their help in making this such a special event for those closest to Jon. “
