HOW very sad, but entirely predictable, that our excellent, admirable and extremely competent chief constable has been forced to retire.

This appears to be linked to the quite unnecessary police and crime commissioner (a person elected by only 19 per cent of the voters).

I suspect that Carmel Napier is the first UK chief to go, but will by no means be the last when these commissioners start to interfere in operational matters which are not within their remit.

The appointment of commissioners is one of the more ludicrous decisions of the present government.
