READERS saw a series of letters from me, during, and subsequent to the election of Ian Johnston as Gwent police commissioner, and letters supporting him from others, including his buddy Paul Harris, who he appointed on a personal decision as his deputy.

In a BBC Wales interview, Johnston snidely accepted a suggestion my opposition to this was “sour grapes”.

In his latest interview, when he was asked about his role in the appointment of the replacement for the Gwent chief constable who had resigned, he declined to make any comment.

He could have been asked about the internal police politics – of which he has wide experience – instrumental in her resignation, but wasn’t.

Those who followed the subject and letters can now clearly see my reassessment of his unsuitability for commissioner is vindicated.

My advice to Ian Johnston is to resign.
