ALTHOUGH I agree with much of what Mr A Greenhalgh has to say in his letter of June 12 about driving on the continent, I fail to see that being lenient with law-breaking motorists has anything to recommend it and would replace the issuing of a summons with an on the spot fine and automatic points on the licence.
Several years ago I was speeding, but was still breaking the law. The points stayed on my licence for six years and reminded me to be more careful.
Belgian motorways were built in the 1950s by British contractors, but are vastly superior to the motorways of Britain.
My wife is a Belgian, born in Brussels, and my friend is German, born in Haslack, in the Black Forest, so I’ve done a lot of driving on Belgian motorways and some on German motorways, too.
