A MAN paralysed by a cycling accident is giving away a huge sum raised to help him walk – to help a Chepstow youngster with the same dream.

Dan Black, 25, will donate all of the money kind-hearted locals collected – over £20,000 – to five-year-old Brecon Vaughan.

This is more than a third of what Brecon needs to book pioneering surgery for a condition called spastic diplegia cerebral palsy.

It causes the Shirenewton Primary pupil stiffness in his legs, poor balance and coordination.

The Free Press teamed up with his family for a £60,000 fundraising campaign for little Brecon to undergo pioneering surgery in the US.

Mr Black, who has needed around the clock care since the accident in 2009, read about the youngster’s plight and stepped in to help.

The majority of his money was raised by family friend Tracy Cameron, who rallied round Daniel when he was in hospital.

He said: “I’m in pretty much the same condition as I was and I thought Brecon can definitely walk, I can’t right now so all that money, I might as well pass in on to him.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone in Mathern, Chepstow and the surrounding area who has helped me out but this boy needs it more than I do at the moment.

“It would make me very happy to see the difference made to Brecon’s life.

“I just hope when I give the money it encourages others to.”

Mr Black’s mum Michaela 45, said: “Daniel’s standard of life is horrendous, we don’t see people. He has one friend who comes to visit him and it’s just not fair. He’s thinking ‘I don’t want that for Brecon.’ “It feels very final to me.

"Daniel goes to bed dreaming he can walk and run. But I agree with him, Brecon’s only five and he should walk.”

The Black family hope in the future Daniel will be able to have stem cell treatment for his paralysis, but they admit while there has been progress in Chinese trials, this would be at least five years away.

Last year, Daniel sued motorist Patrick Barrett for more than £300,000 for the injuries he sustained in the crash, while cycling to work at Chepstow Tesco on the A48.

The parties ended up settling an undisclosed sum out of court.

It costs the Black family £180,000 a year for Daniel’s 24 hour care.

The family live together in Llanvair Discoed, providing a support network for Daniel, who has a live-in carer.

Four years on from the accident, his mum is only just returning to the workplace with a new job at Homebase Chepstow.

Daniel, currently confined to bed, is hoping to meet Brecon at a fundraiser taking place at the Miller’s Arms, at 6pm on Saturday.

Twysted River, Ian Luther, John McConnachie and former The Voice contestant Hannah Berney will be playing for free.

“We are looking forward to seeing Dan and Brecon enjoying the day,” said landlord Chris Thompson.

The community is invited to attend.

Entry is £5 to include the entertainment, BBQ and auction.
