A LORRY driver received life threatening injuries after crashing on the A449 this morning.

The male driver appears to have lost control of his vehicle, hit the central reservation and his lorry overturned shortly after 6am, police said.

The A449 between Usk and Coldra in Newport is shut in both directions and is not expected to reopen before 10am.

The driver has been airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

“The male driver was seriously injured and he does have life threatening injuries.

“As it is a bank holiday we anticipate heavy traffic later in the day but there has been no rush hour and there hasn’t been any traffic congestion.

“We anticipate to reopen the road at 10am.”
