UPDATE: 5.40pm

Monmouthshire councillor Anne Webb, member for St Arvans, said: "It is just awful, I feel dreadfully sorry for the relatives. The road to the Old Station is well used as it's a lovely place to go but for people who are not aware, the entrance is on a nasty bend. If I had a wish list I would get the whole road to the end of my ward at 40mph.

"We have had meetings with the head of highways and hopefully the road in Tintern will be put at the top of the agenda."

Cllr Tony Hayward, vice-chairman of Tintern Community Council, said: "A lot of local residents have been trying to reduce the speed limit on the road for a number of years. It is 60mph road and the entrance to the Old Station can be restrictive.

"We've had talks of capping it at 40mph. We would want it to be 30mph at least to Brockweir Bridge but I don't think they would be keen on that."

A spokeswoman for Wales Air Ambulance (WAA) said the airlift of casualties was carried with the Great Western Air Ambulance (Bristol).

She said the WAA crew treated and airlifted man with multiple injuries to Southmead Hospital. The crew landed on scene 11.45am, left the area at 1.10pm and arrived at hospital 1.20pm.

A member of the WAA crew assisted with the treatment of a woman, also with multiple injuries, and flew with Great Western Air Ambulance.
