CHEPSTOW School was one of three secondary schools to experience bullying twitter accounts set up by in October by pupils to send abusive messages.

A few students were involved with a Twitter account called @cheppoburnbook which is said to have harassed people online and was 'designed to bully' students - according to a letter to parents sent by Claire Price, headteacher of the school.

She wrote: "I have spoken to local schools about accounts that exist in their name, but that also identify our students, and I have contacted the police.

"Please can you be aware of your children’s use of social media, and remind them of the importance of staying safe online. I will continue to monitor the Chepstow burn book account and I will be contacting parents of any students found to be associated with this account in any way, or that are involved in any other burn book accounts."

Caldicot School and Wyedean School also experienced similar accounts in the week of October 6.

The 'burn book' has been associated with the 2004 film Mean Girls which contained rumours and gossip about pupils and teachers.

Simon Rees, assistant head teacher of Caldicot School, said: "The region had a few issues with Twitter accounts and Chepstow School addressed a group of their students. It reverberated in the area for that week and we were aware of a Caldicot account which was set up.

"It was closed down quickly. We have procedures in place and have internet safety days."

Clive Pemberton, headteacher of Wyedean School and Sixth Form Centre, said: "Students made us aware of the accounts and they were taken down within the week. We didn't know who they were.

"The idea for burn books had been around before, but we have no idea how it started up in this area - it came out of nowhere but just as quickly was taken down.

“We've taken advice from the police. The students were quite upset about what was going on.

"We have an e-safety policy for students but it is difficult as this was outside of school."
