THE whole Dewstow ward in Caldicot will be a 20mph zone from January 2015.

The 20mph area is currently around Dewstow Primary School on Green Lane and will be extended to cover the whole ward which is currently a 30mph area.

Cllr Tony Easson, member for Dewstow said: "It's a very important step that I fully support and have been pushing for the last few years. There are two schools in the ward, the roads are fairly narrow and we have a couple of playgrounds - it will be great for the children to be able to have safe routes to and from school.

"The whole of my ward will be 20mph and also part of Green Lane ward. I hope that it will be implemented as quickly as possible.”

Monmouthshire council will be creating a report to make the speed limit order and anticipate this will come into force in January 2015.

Paul Keeble, Monmouthshire council's traffic and network manager said: "We have approved an order to extend the 20mph zone in the area around Dewstow Primary School to incorporate surrounding streets. This measure should benefit the whole community by increasing levels of road safety within a high density residential area."

Cllr Easson added: "The police support the introduction of a 20mph zone. We don't have a huge amount of traffic but we do get the odd cars that speed around there - hopefully this will put a stop to it."

"More and more councils are looking to implement 20 mph zones - I think Thornwell in Chepstow is being considered as well."
