Fire crews from Blaenavon and Abergavenny were unable to help rescue stranded sheep near Abergavenny until the tide had gone down.

They left the scene at 8.22am. A spokeswoman for the Fire Service could not say what condition the sheep were in.

The A4042 has been closed in both directions from the Hardwick roundabout in Abergavenny to Little Mill and diversions are in place.

A spokeswoman for Monmouthshire council said council workers had been responding all night prioritising the supply of sandbags and checking culverts in affected areas.

They had dealt with several fallen trees blocking roads and general debris washed onto the roads making driving difficult. She said culverts didn’t cope with the volume of water in some places and warning signs have been put up in affected areas.

She added road conditions would remain difficult asked drivers to drive with care as surface water on the roads will continue to make driving conditions difficult. Anyone with concerns should contact their local Monmouthshire One Stop Shop to report problems.

Around 150 sheep trapped in a flooded field are in danger of being swept into a river this morning.

Firefighters from Abergavenny are at the scene at Pyscodlyn Caravan Park on Brecon Road and are contacting the farmer and requesting tidal information.

A flood warning is in place for the River Usk from Glangrwyne to Newbridge-on-Usk.

Firefighters from Brynmawr are in their way to rescue a person stuck in their car in flood water on the A4042 near Llanellen.

Flooding has hit parts of Gwent overnight and this morning.

The River Usk has burst both banks at Llanfoist near Abergavenny with Castle Meadows flooded this morning.

Firefighters had to pump out flooded houses near Abergavenny last night.

They were called to Llantilio Pertholey at 8.58 where around 2000 litres of water from a culvert had flooded two properties.

Crews remained at the scene for eight hours pumping water from the homes and arranging sandbags to prevent further damage.

The occupant of a car was rescued by firefighters when their car became stuck in flood water and began drifting dangerously in Michaelston y Fedw at 3.54am this morning.

Crews from Duffryn and Malpas attended.

A fire crew from Abergavenny is rescuing sheep trapped in a flooded field.

They were called to the scene at Pysgodyn Caravan Park on Brecon Road at 7.41am.

In another incident a car was driven through flood water on the road from Abergavenny to Cwmbran and is now stuck. A recovery service is en-route.

Flooding also was reported on the road outside Bryn Meadows Golf Club on Mountain Road, Maesycwmmer.
