A WASTE ground between Caldicot and Rogiet has been branded “completely unacceptable” by Newport East MP Jessica Morden.

Ms Morden visited the former engineer works at Garthalan Drive after reports last week of three miles of walkway that is a dumping ground for fly-tippers.

The path is littered with a burnt-out car and settee, a mattress, building materials, a toilet, fridge, kitchen knife, children’s toys and rotting food.

Residents who use the public right of way to walk their dogs or get to the Severn Tunnel Junction train station claim the site is now a health hazard.

Ms Morden said: “I have every sympathy with the residents and have raised it directly with Monmouthshire County Council.”

Resident Alan Dowling, of Longfellow Road, said the once-beautiful area is now an environmental disaster.

Mr Dowling claims residents are angry and frustrated that repeated calls for the site to be cleared up since 2002 have been ignored.

Monmouthshire county and ward councillor, David Evans said: “It’s not fair on the residents.

“Boulders should be put in place to stop vehicles gaining access and a chain back on the gate.”

Monmouthshire Council previously said there is funding to place concrete boulders but that it is prevented from doing so because of a mobile home on the land. Its social services team is working with the two occupants to look at housing solutions but any clear up is unlikely until they have left the site.

A council spokesman said: “We are looking for volunteers for a spring clean on March 20 and 21.

“We believe that we could make a real difference.”
