THE head teacher of a Monmouthshire special school has been suspended pending an investigation.

Monmouthshire council has confirmed that a senior member of staff at the school has been suspended.

But the Argus understands that it is the head teacher Paul Absalom who has been suspended following concerns from the governing body about the implementation of policy.

The school is maintained by Monmouthshire County Council and admits boys aged 11 to 16 with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

The school currently has 44 pupils who attend from local authorities throughout England and Wales.

Cllr Phil Murphy, cabinet member for resources and recently appointed chair of governors at the Pwllmeyric school, said: “We had some concerns on the implementation of policy we thought worthy of investigation. We are awaiting the result of the investigation and any action will be taken where and if it is appropriate.”

“I anticipate the investigation will be all sorted out during the summer holidays.”

He added: “It is the governing body acting responsibly to check things out.”

Deputy head Mark McCormick along with professional support will be in charge in the interim.

The head’s suspension follows the school’s latest Estyn inspection report published last week which found the current performance was adequate and the school’s prospect for improvement was adequate.

Care, support and guidance were found to be unsatisfactory and inspectors said additional learning needs are not well met by the school.

Recommendations included suggestions that pupils’ attendance and engagement in lessons are improved and that behaviour management policy is applied consistently.

A Monmouthshire council spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a senior member of staff at Mounton House School has been formally suspended whilst the governing body undertakes an investigation of matters that were causing concern. This suspension is neutral and non-prejudicial whilst the investigations are ongoing. The governing body for the school is fulfilling its responsibilities and is dealing appropriately with the matter.”
