RENEWED calld for a reduced speed limit on the B4235 near Shirenewton have come from residents after another motorcyclist was involved in a collision on the road.

Residents in Mynydd Bach, a village near the B4235 Usk Road, have been petitioning for a lower speed limit on the road for the past four years. The most recent accident on the B4235 took place on July 18 which involved a motorbike where a man was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for treatment.

Residents say this is a dangerous road for motorbikes and want Monmouthshire council to reduce the speed limit to 40mph.They say a number of motorbikes are speeding along the road on weekends, especially during the summer months.

Nick Vincent, 61, a resident of Mynydd Bach, said: "Accidents will keep happening, I don't want to sound like a soothsayer of doom but another death will occur on this road. There is no reason why it won't on the behaviour we have witnessed.

"Monmouthshire council's highways department need to face the fact that this is a dangerous road for motorbikes to use and needs a lower speed limit."

Monmouthshire council said the environment along this section of the road is not suitable for a 40mph speed limit under current guidance but said they would provide double white lines to prevent overtaking.

A council spokesman said: "Both the police and council officers believe this will address the concerns of the community and this arrangement is easier to enforce.

"The request for a lower speed limit is something that may need to be considered if the lining works fail to meet expectations."

He added: “Meanwhile, recent speed measurements indicate that the average vehicle is not driving at excessive speed and drivers appear to be observing the advisory 40mph signs.”

The South Monmouthshire inspector, Lysha Thompson, said there is an ongoing operation to tackle speeding along the B4235 which will remain in place during the summer.

She said they are working with the council's highways department to look at longer term measures to improve safety measures along the road and said she is fully supportive of any traffic calming measures which will help with road safety in the area.
