The A40 in Monmouth is now open in both directions and traffic is flowing

A 50-year-old man from the Newport area has been arrested on suspicious of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The northbound carriage way has now re-opened and southbound carriageway re-opening is estimated as late this afternoon.

Two men have been taken to hospital with “life-changing injuries” and one man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after this morning's crash on the A40 involving two lorries.

The pair have been taken to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 5.50am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision involving two HGVs on the A40 near Monmouth.

Following the crash, another two vehicles collided on the opposite side of the road and two people sustained minor injuries.

The northbound carriageway will be re-opening shortly.

The southbound carriage way will be closed for a substantial period of time, with diversions in place from the Monmouth traffic lights to the Wye Valley.

Traffic officers are on the scene advising HGV lorries of alternative routes as the Wye Valley route has weight restrictions.

A40 southbound closed, queueing traffic due to the crash involving two articulated lorries between B4293 Beech Road (Just Before The Gibraltar Tunnels) and A449 (Raglan Interchange). The accident has happened at the Mitchel Troy Junction. Emergency Services are at the scene.

Traffic is also unable to exit from Mitchel Troy itself onto the southbound A40. Traffic caught up behind is being released using the exit slip road.

Diversion: To use the B4233 and the B4293 but vehicles over 16ft are advised to use an alternative route.

UPDATE: 8.13am

The A40 Northbound is closed due to recovery work following another crash involving a single vehicle between A449 (Raglan Interchange) and A466 (Monmouth Traffic Lights).

Lane one of two was blocked by a car that hit the barrier on the hard shoulder, directly opposite the scene of the accident on the opposite carriageway.

Traffic was passing the scene in lane two, but the road was completely closed around 7.15pm.

The northbound minor incident has been cleared and crews have left the scene.

Two people in the southbound incident have been cut from one of the vehicles by crews using hydraulic cutting equipment.

All emergency services currently remain at scene

Fire control have said that there are two incidents on the same stretch of road.

On the southbound carriageway there is a crash involving two light goods vehicles.

Crews were called to this at 5.50am. 

Two crews from Monmouth and two from Malpas are in attendance.

On the opposite carriageway, there is a crash between two cars. This is said to be a minor incident with one fire crew in attendance after receiving the call at 6.27am.

South Wales Fire and Rescue service are advising drivers to avoid A40 Southbound.

Crews are currently in attendance at rtc between Monmouth and Raglan.

The A40 Northbound, Mitchel Troy to Gibraltar Tunnels, is also reported as being closed due to the incident.
