CAMPAIGNERS who petitioned to save the services at Magor Post Office are thrilled after finding out it will remain open after January.

The current postmistress was due to leave the post on January 4, but she will now stay on in a temporary basis as there are people wishing to apply for the vacancy.

A representative from the Post Office met with campaigners last week and said there is a potentially to the change the classification of Magor Post Office from local to a main office which could make the Magor site more attractive for someone to run.

Councillor Frances Taylor, member for Mill ward, started a petition to keep the service in its current form, and has had it signed by more than 1,400 people.

Cllr Taylor said: "I think they were impressed and pretty overwhelmed with how much correspondence they received from local people. It's really good news."

"Lots of residents had written emailed and phoned the Post Office to raise their concerns."

Cllr Taylor said the Post Office said finding a new person to take over the role from the current post mistress will be a priority.

Newport East AM John Griffiths also held talks with the Post Office last week.

He told the Argus: “It was promising in terms of what the news that they had to impart.

“If it comes to fruition it is good news and hopefully it will satisfy the views of the local community.”
