A PAIR of Gwent MPs have weighed in on Welsh figures they would like to see represented on Wales-only banknotes.

In a Parliamentary debate on the possibility of introducing Welsh banknotes, as already exist in Scotland and Northern Ireland, on Tuesday, April 19, Blaenau Gwent MP Nick Smith suggested NHS founder Aneurin Bevan should be one of the figures represented.

And his Torfaen colleague Nick Thomas-Symonds suggested Leo Abse, who served as Labour MP for Pontypool for 25 years from 1958 until 1983, saying he made “probably the greatest contribution in the 20th century as a back bencher to changing people’s lives”.

Mr Abse, who died in 2008, was best known for his efforts to decriminalise male homosexual relations and campaigning for more liberal divorce laws.
