SCHOOLS around Wales celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday today with some parties.

High Cross Primary School, in Rogerstone threw their own royal-themed teddy bears picnic.

Organised by the school's parents and teachers association there were specially decorated cupcakes, a happy birthday sing-along and paper crowns.

The entire school took part with all pupils and even their teachers taking along their teddies.

PTA chairwoman Michelle Draper said she believes the children will always remember the day, but also that it helped them learn more about the Queen.

“She’s global isn’t she? I think it’s important that they know about her and because of this they will always remember this day,” she said.

Vice-chairwoman Rachel Rodway added: “I can remember going to wave to Princess Diana and Prince Charles when they came to Newport.”

Each child was given a limited edition 90th birthday coin by the PTA as a keepsake .

“The PTA chose to buy every child in the school one of the coins for them to have to remember this special day,” said Mrs Draper.

“Every single child, including the nursery children, will go home with one of these.”

At St Mary’s Primary in Chepstow, children celebrated with an assembly in the morning to learn about the queen and her life.

It was followed by them singing the national anthem and a special lunch where staff wore masks of the queen’s face.

Natasha Duffield, who works at the school, said: “It was fab, absolutely fantastic. The kids were just creasing up.

“It went really, really well. The children enjoyed it and really understood what they were celebrating.”
