PUPILS at Castle Park Primary School in Caldicot discovered their inner-architect as they worked together to build their own replica bridge recently.

The bridge-building workshop was carried out by four members of the River Severn Crossing Group, who split the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils into groups of four.

Each group had their own decisions to make as well as their own area of the build to maintain, with some managing the bridge. The pupils then tested the bridge’s strength by walking across it and made changes where it was necessary.

According to deputy head Linda Green, the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She said: “The pupils learned that there is a lot of teamwork involved in bridge-building."

“They were able to talk about which parts of the bridge needed to change and worked with the other groups to carry out those changes.”

Such initiative was also evident at a fundraising school fete that the children held earlier in the week, which was organised largely by the pupils themselves.

The children had a hand in designing the table tops for the stalls as well as creating their own games for their schoolmates.

Overall, the children managed to raise £78 for the Send A Cow charity.
