A “FREE-FOR-ALL” broke out at a Gwent football ground on Friday night after a glass bottle was reportedly thrown onto the pitch.

Police were called to Caldicot Town AFC’s stadium at Jubilee Way following reports of disorder at full-time of the Gill Cup final between the home side and Underwood Athletic.

An eyewitness told the Argus that a glass bottle was thrown and players from both clubs were chased off the pitch following Underwood’s 2-1 victory.

Sean Johnson, 27, who is Underwood’s club secretary, said he was the one who called the police after the bottle was thrown from the patio area of the stadium while the players were celebrating at full-time.

He said: “There were women and children within the vicinity of where it landed. Following the glass landing, it’s just ended up in a free-for-all until it’s all been split up.

“It’s not something that usually happens at this kind of level."

A member of the East Gwent Association Football League confirmed that the matter is now in the hands of the Gwent County FA.

The Argus understands that there will be an investigation into the matter and a hearing could be held, with representations from both teams.

Mr Johnson said both clubs will receive the referee’s report on the game by the end of the week and they will then have 10 days to respond and plead.

He added: "At this stage, in terms of the investigation, it’s quite early on. Certainly, everybody is waiting to hear what the referee’s report is on the game.”

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said officers were called to Jubilee Way at about 8.55pm. There was no one injured and no one was arrested.

A spokesman for the Football Association of Wales said: “The game was for their third team, which means the discipline for that team would be managed by the Gwent County FA.”

Underwood won the final 2-1 after extra time.
