AROUND 70 people turned up on the banks of the River Wye in Monmouth to compete in the third Great Wye Swim last weekend.

Competitors came from across the country to take part in the event, organised by Monmouth School Sports Club, and they raised in the region of £1,000 for the Children’s Society.

, offered two courses – a 2km course, with 500m upstream, or a shorter 1km downstream course.

Launching the race was MP David Davies, who also donned a wetsuit to compete in the race.

“On behalf of everyone involved, I would like to thank staff at the Sports Club for arranging another fantastic swim,” said Mr Davies.

“The Wye at Monmouth is a beautiful spot and this was a lovely way to cool off on a hot morning, as well as raising money for a worthwhile cause.”
