DOMINO’S Pizza has confirmed that they will open a new store in Caldicot next year, creating 30 jobs for local people.

The global pizza chain have chosen two vacant buildings along Newport Road in the town centre for the new venture.

The store would be the third to open in Monmouthshire alongside outlets in nearby Chepstow and Abergavenny.

Heidi Bartholomew, a spokeswoman for Domino’s, said: “We are very much looking forward to bringing freshly handmade pizza to homes in Caldicot when our new store on Newport Road opens early next year.

“The new store will create 30 jobs for local people and our full team of trainee managers, pizza makers, customer service representatives and delivery experts will be on-board and ready to serve delicious, piping hot pizza to residents when our doors open.”

Plans for the store have been in the pipeline since February this year, when an application to divide and change the use of two units in the Wesley Buildings was approved.

Permission to fit LED signs was granted in March, and proposals for the restaurant’s ventilation system are currently being considered by Monmouthshire County Council.

Planning documents show one of the units, which was formerly a British Heart Foundation shop, will house the counter and food preparation area.

They also reveal designs for a seated area in the neighbouring building, the former Concorde Extra discount store.

The most recent application, seeking permission to open the store from 10am til midnight seven days a week, has attracted complaints from some Caldicot residents.

Several objectors say the store could take business away from the recently-opened Italian restaurant FrAtelli, which is located on the other side of the Wesley Buildings.

Jayne Barnett wrote: “We already have more than enough eating places in Caldicot. We should encourage more retail shops”

Joanne Colla added: “I feel another takeaway outlet will cause more rubbish blowing around the centre and it will become even more unsightly than it already is.”

There has been some support for Domino’s on the application, with Anthony Morgan writing: “Good to see well-known worldwide brands coming to Caldicot and making use of the many empty shops, will bring jobs which are needed as well.”
