PUB managers in Chepstow and Monmouth are feeling relieved after scooping top toilet awards.

The Bell Hanger in Saint Mary Street, Chepstow, and The King’s Head in Agincourt Square, Monmouth, were awarded platinum star ratings by inspectors ? the highest possible.

The awards, celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, are aimed at highlighting and improving standards of 'away from home' toilet provision across the UK.

Loo of the Year Awards inspectors make unannounced visits to thousands of toilets at sites across the UK, in order to judge them.

All of the toilets are graded from bronze to platinum with unacceptable toilets not graded at all.

The platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer "exceptional toilets."

The toilets are judged against numerous criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.

The Bell Hanger and The King's Head are both Wetherspoon pubs.

Christopher Jenkins, manager at The King's Head, said: "We have just undergone a lot of refurbishments during the summer including getting our toilets refurbished.

“We are very pleased to be given this award.”

Rebecca Avery, shift manager at The Bell Hanger, was also feeling flushed with success.

She said: “We pride ourselves on our standards and customer service.

"We are very proud to have won the award for our toilets.”

Loo of the Year Awards 2017 managing director, Mike Bone, said both 'richly deserved' the award.
