Joanna Lumley offered people the chance to own a piece of showbiz history as she auctioned off some of her most famous outfits in aid of charity.

Garments worn by the actress in her most memorable roles, including Patsy in comedy series Absolutely Fabulous and crime fighter Purdey in The New Avengers, raised £15,000 for the Prince's Trust.

Lumley, 66, said she considered selling only items which were special to her, including her entire personal collection of Ab Fab clothing.

"I am giving up some of my greatest treasures and happiest memories", she said. "I am so thrilled to think that the proceeds will all go to benefit young people through one of my all-time favourite charities, the Prince's Trust. I love each item and each garment with a passion."

Some 50 items went under the hammer at Kerry Taylor Auctions in central London. A Joseph zebra print coat worn by Lumley in the opening credits to Absolutely Fabulous fetched £850, far exceeding the estimate of £200-£300.

A range of underwear and corsets from her role as Purdey in The New Avengers sold for £380, while a black velvet hat worn by Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous raised £700.

A Chanel suit worn by her during her high-profile Gurkha Justice campaign sold for £750.

The biggest sale was an album cover owned by Lumley which was signed by screen stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor from their 1963 film The V.I.Ps. It was bought for £1,300.

Kerry Taylor, who hosted the auction, said: "It was very special because Joanna was up on the stage with me for the auction.

"She told a story with each piece. People who attended didn't just get an auction, they got a performance. She even finished by saying 'Cheers, sweeties', in true Patsy style. She's an incredible woman."
