Cameras to ward off burglars

POLICE in Torfaen are using new tactics in a bid to combat burglaries in the area.

Latest figures show there has been an increase in the number of burglaries across Torfaen and Monmouthshire with 88 incidents in the past two months.

People are being urged to be vigilant and to secure their property as most of the houses that have been burgled had been left unsecured.

In many cases homeowners have also had their cars stolen, as thieves have been able to easily pick up car keys and drive off with their vehicles.

In order to combat this officers have been installing cameras in homes that are potentially vulnerable and susceptible to burglary, to catch offenders in the act.

Local police are also utilising the Automatic Number Plate Recognition Vehicle to catch offenders who go into rural areas to commit burglary, many of whom are also wanted for a number of other crimes and driving related offences.

Inspector Dave Moses from the Community Safety Unit, Gwent Police said: "Many of these burglaries can be prevented if residents could lock their windows and doors.

"We understand that at this time of the year when the weather is warmer, it is tempting to leave windows and doors open, however, to be burgled is an expensive and inconvenient thing to happen."
