A TORFAEN-BASED military charity has launched a free advice service for servicemen returning to civilian life in what was hailed as a renewed commitment to the armed forces.

Pontypool charity Hire a Hero joined forces with Torfaen council to offer the monthly drop-in service to support ex-military personnel and their families and direct them to the right agencies.

Veterans will be able to access support services at Pontypool Civic Centre on the first Tuesday of each month, between 10am and 2pm.

Torfaen armed forces champion Cllr Giles Davies said: ““We are pleased to be partnering with Hire a Hero to provide the support necessary to the Torfaen military family. “We are keen to recognise the sacrifices made and provide appropriate support.”

Hire a Hero chief executive Gerry Hill said: “Our partnership with Torfaen County Borough Council is a great step in providing support for those who have served in the region, as well as demonstrating the work that Hire a Hero are doing locally alongside the council to fulfil the aims of the armed forces community covenant.

“We hope the drop-in will give serving, ex-military personnel and their families the opportunity to seek face-to-face support locally for whatever issues they may be encountering in civilian life.”

Cllr Davies added: “If you are a member of the armed forces, a veteran, family member or widower, we will provide easy access to the support you are entitled to.

“Whenever requesting a service, make us aware that you are a member of the armed forces community. There are often special rules that apply in relation to local government services.”

Hire a Hero advisers will be on hand to advise and signpost service leavers and their families between 10am-2pm.
