A Gwent woman who fought a mother on a street after hitting her with a glass bottle has been given a suspended sentence.

On October 27 last year, Leanne Powell, of Curwood, Blaenavon, drove past Sue Hill, a woman with whom she previously had disagreements, and Mrs Hill’s 12-year-old daughter as they walked home.

She parked her car and approached them, started to swear at Mrs Hill and the girl, and hit the mother with a bottle which smashed.

Powell subsequently lost false nails as she scratched the victim’s left cheek.

The attack caused a cut measuring half an inch and tenderness to the cheek.

She then fell on Mrs Hill and tried to hit her face further, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Powell, 33, cried as Judge David Wynn Jones passed her sentence on one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He said she had committed a “disgraceful offence”.

He added: “It was over a year ago but it was bad business, wasn’t it?

“There was no need for it to happen. Instead you threw a bottle... and that is not fair, is it?”

He said the offence warranted a custodial sentence of 24 weeks but that he would suspend it for the next year because she had pleaded guilty earlier.

She will be required to follow a supervision order and the judge passed a restraining order to prevent Powell from contacting Mrs Hill and her daughter indefinitely.

Powell will also be required to pay a victim surcharge of £80 to Mrs Hill within two months.

Because of Powell’s financial circumstances – she is currently in receipt of benefits – she will not be required to pay any further costs.
