BLAENAVON RFC has paid to tribute to a popular former player - described as a club 'stalwart'.

Paul Thomas unexpectedly died on November 9 at his Blaenavon home.

Posting on its website, the club said: “It was with great regret that Blaenavon RFC has learned about the death of one of its most popular players and club stalwart Paul 'Alwyn' Thomas who was found dead."

Mr Thomas played for Blaenavon Youth in the early 80s and graduated to be a first team regular for most of his rugby career.

The club said: “He has always remained a Blaenavon stalwart and one of our most loyal club supporters regularly seen at matches and at the bar and who will be sadly missed.”

The club added that their "condolences go out to his family at this sad time".

He leaves behind his partner Sandra and son's Liam and Josh.

The funeral will take place today (Thursday, November 20) with a service at St Peters Church at 12.45pm.

Cremation will then follow at the Gwent Crematorium, Croesyceiliog, from 2pm, with a wake held afterwards at Blaenavon Rugby Club.

"The family request that you please attend the club even if you cannot make the funeral," they club added on the website.
