A CWMBRAN woman celebrated her 102nd birthday this week.

Bronwen Baber, from Pontnewydd, who now lives in Cwmbran House Care Centre, turned 102 on Monday.

Mrs Baber, who was born in 1912, celebrated with family and friends at a party held for her at the residential care home.

Mrs Baber was born and grew up in Pontnewydd, before securing a job at the Abersychan Co-op. Throughout her life, she always had a passion for knitting and would send items overseas to countries such as Belarus. She still continues on with her hobby and can be found regularly knitting items in Cwmbran House.

The 102-year-old was married to William John Baber in 1937 in Bethany Chapel, Pontnewynydd after they met outside the Co-op in Abersychan. The pair went on to have two sons, Paul and Stuart, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Care assistant at Cwmbran House, Claire Edwards said: “She is absolutely amazing for her age, even at 102 she is still very independent and is able to do things like the knitting and walk around and have quite a lot of independence.

“She is a real fighter, she was brought to the care home about four or five months ago after turning very ill and the family didn’t think she was going to make it. But she pulled through and here she is, it’s great!

“Family and friends came to celebrate her birthday with her and the staff baked a cake for her. The whole day was absolutely lovely,” Miss Edwards said.

Mrs Baber admits she doesn’t know the secret to a long life. She said: “I really don’t know what the secret is, I honestly couldn’t tell you! I don’t think I do anything different from anybody else!”
