PUPILS at Pontnewynydd Primary School have been celebrating following successes in a number of competitions.

Following on from their recent success in winning the South East Wales Safeguarding Children's Board e-safety competition, the pupils of Dosbarth Porffor (year five and six) wrote an anti-bullying script to enter the Welsh Assembly Governments Anti-bullying film competition which they went on to win.

They have a visit from representatives of the film company, JM Creative, who helped the pupils create their advert at the school, which will be released later in the year.

Also, 15 pupils from the school took part in the South Wales Finals of the F1 in Schools South Wales Finals held at the Celtic Manor competing against 24 other schools across South Wales.

One of the teams, Team Poison Dart, became South Wales Champions and also won the Best Engineered Car at the event. The pupils had spent four months creating their own F1 company, designing and creating a model race car, designing merchandise and team wear, finding sponsors and promoting their team through social media.

The school has retained the title of South Wales Champions following on from the success of Team Lightning Bolt the previous year.

The school’s Team Phoenix, took part in the UK Finals of the F1 in Schools Bloodhound SSC class at the NEC in Birmingham recently. Competing against schools from all over the UK, the school represented Wales for the third year in a row at the national event.

The team won the Best Sponsorship and Marketing Awards at the UK Finals for their social media work, television studio work including advertising and team documentary and work with sponsors in the local community. The team would like to thank S Reed Construction, SprayCraft Pontypool, Ebbw Vale RFC, Jenson Travel and Balan Sports for their help and support in reaching the UK Finals.
