A TORFAEN mum has helped to smash a world record skydive after being inspired by her son who battled leukaemia for nearly four years.

Jordan Chandler was diagnosed with Leukaemia in August 2011, at the age of 14.

But in February, he was given the good news that he is in remission and it was his bravery that inspired his mum, Donna Freebury, to take part in a sky dive.

Mrs Freebury, who lives in Griffithstown with Jordan, her husband Rob, and son William, said she wanted to raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust when she came across the skydive in memory of Stephen Sutton MBE and signed up.

Fundraiser Stephen set his heart on breaking the record for the most number of tandem skydives in one day at a single venue. Unfortunately he died before he was able to make it a reality.

Inspired by him, Teenage Cancer Trust organised the world-record-breaking skydiving event at Hibaldstow Airfield in Lincolnshire on July 10 – and 402 people took the jump at 10,000 feet- including Mrs Freebury.

She said: “It was amazing”.

Mrs Freebury, 33, set a personal fundraising target for the trust of £350. But she has exceeded her goal by reaching £927 in donations.

She added: “I’m overwhelmed by the support and would like to thank everyone who donated.”

Mrs Freebury explained that after his diagnosis it turned into “a nightmare,” with Jordan being rushed to hospital as he not only fought the disease, but also developed E.coli and fungal growths on his lungs.

He remained in the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for three months, where he received intense chemotherapy, and since then he has been back and forth for treatment.

At the time of diagnosis, Jordan was a pupil at Croesyceiliog Comprehensive pupil and missed all of year 10 and most of year 11. But he was determined to not let his education suffer, and completed some exams.

He is now studying music at Crosskeys College.
