GWENT Police officers in Cwmbran will tackle the ongoing reports of anti-social behaviour in Greenmeadow with court orders if needed, it has been warned amid growing concern over anti-social behaviour in the area.

Police and community support officers have introduced measures such as dispersal orders in the past months to curb the incidents, but are considering stricter arrangements to deal with the problem.

Inspector David Morgan has stated that Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs), which have replaced the ASBO, will be used in their long term plans.

“Cwmbran officers are aware of concerns relating to anti-social behaviour in the Greenmeadow ward area,” said inspector Morgan.

“Recent reports have included stone throwing, loud noise, and the theft of wheelie bins where some have been later set on fire.”

The police have started to work alongside other bodies in Torfaen, and, through partnership work, the force is trying to reach out to those committing the offences.

“Over the last three months, officers have been working to engage with younger people who visit the area by liaising with key partners, such as Torfaen County Borough Council, youth workers and Registered Social Landlords (RSLs),” inspector Morgan added.

“Key offenders are being identified and work is on-going to change behaviours.”

Speaking at the Cwmbran Community Council meeting earlier this month, inspector Morgan explained that there are a list of 15-20 names who are known to the police from the Greenmeadow area and are causing a large percentage of the crimes.

“In some cases, Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) have been issued and some have signed Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs),” he added.

“We are also sharing information with Registered Social Landlords to address any issues where tenants are breaching their terms and conditions.”

The police have set up groups to help those who are the victim of anti-social behaviour incidents, and, despite the ongoing reports of cases, inspector Morgan believes that positive change is happening.

“A victim support group has been set up in conjunction with Bron Afon Housing and RSLs which is designed to help victims, demonstrate they are not alone and help them to become confident in reporting anti-social behaviour to the police,” he said.”

“This is a long term process but we are gradually seeing improvements in the area. I’d like to encourage anyone experiencing anti-social behaviour in Torfaen to please report this to us by calling 101.”
