THE jury in the trial of a Cwmbran man accused of abusing a boy under 16 has been sent out.

David Jeffries, aged 59, of Orchid Court, is on trial at Newport Crown Court.

He denies all seven charges against him: three counts of indecently assaulting a child under 12; one count of sexual activity with a child under 13; two counts of sexual activity with a child under 16; and one count of sexual activity in the presence of a child.

He is on bail.

The allegations were made by the complainant to the police on February 26 of last year and relate to alleged abuse over a 10-year period, when the alleged victim was under the age of 16.

One of the case’s facts that both the prosecution and the defence agree on is that Google search terms for videos of teenage boys were found on Jeffries’ ACER computer by the police.

The court heard Jeffries had a photograph of the complainant on his computer in which the boy was naked.

Mike Hammett, prosecuting, in his closing speech today, said: “What does that say about this defendant?"

The court heard that Jeffries Google search terms included gay teens.

Judge Tom Crowther QC in his summing up said the defendant’s wife said Jeffries had used search terms to look for artistic pictures not at pornography.

The defendant had said he was searching for photographs for inspiration to lose weight.

Mr Hammett said: “Is he really being honest with you or is it a lie to hide, because he is as a married man with children, and has been for many years hiding the fact his sexual intentions lie elsewhere.”

Mr Bennett, defending Jeffries a father of two, said: “He it seems on one occasion rather stupidly did a bit of inappropriate web surfing. This doesn’t mean he is guilty of sexually abusing a child for a number of years.”

Mr Bennett said ‘absolutely nobody suspected anything’ with regard to the abuse which is alleged to have taken place over many years.
