UPDATE: 7.40pm March 17

AN INVESTIGATION is underway after an elderly man and woman were found dead at a house in Penygarn.

Gwent Police were called to the address on Channel View in the Torfaen village following concerns for the welfare of the occupants.

The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and forensics were on the scene, carrying out tests on the premises.

Residents from the neighbouring properties said that the man and the woman from the Penygarn address were rarely seen in public, but were friendly and approachable.

Neighbour Joanne Neat said: "I have lived here for the past 15 years or so and I haven't seen much of the couple in that time.

"I occasionally saw the woman who lived there but I never saw the man much. In the last few months particularly, not much at all.

"They were the people who you would say hello to in the street."

Ms Neat said first she saw the police were outside from about 4pm in a car and then later a van arrived.

"It is sad news, especially for the family,” she added.

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "I had not seen much of the couple for a few years.

"I got home from work about 5.30pm and I saw police cars on the road."

A spokeswoman from Gwent Police added that enquiries are ongoing into the deaths of the man and woman involved in the incident.

The South Wales Ambulance Service were called to the scene, but stood down.

A spokesman from the ambulance service said: “We were called at just after 1.10pm to an incident at an address in Penygarn, Pontypool but were stood down as not required since Police were at the scene.”
