A YEAR of fundraising will take place in honour of a Cwmbran teenager who has helped raise almost £100,000 for charity.

Emily Clark, the 18-year-old from Llantarnam who had beaten cancer for a second time following a bone marrow transplant, died from breathing difficulties on March 12.

The teenager's mum Donna Dunn said she estimates that her daughter has helped raise nearly to £100,000 for different charities including the Teenage Cancer Trust and Bloodwise.

As part of her campaign to find a bone marrow match for herself, and the 1,800 other people searching in the UK, Miss Clark began to call on people aged 16 and 30 to join the bone marrow register for charity Anthony Nolan. She also called on people aged between 17 and 55 to join the Delete Blood Cancer bone marrow register.

Ms Dunn said: "I am extremely proud. We were working out how much Emily has raised and we think it's closer to £100,000 for different charities she's been involved in supporting, through events she's spoken at and afternoon tea events she's organised."

Miss Clark set up Remission Possible blog which covered her progress during her cancer treatment to help support other teenagers. Her family have launched a just giving page to raise £20,000 to go towards creating the only bone marrow transplant unit in Wales for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board where Miss Clark received treatment.

They have raised £2, 285 so far on the page. Ms Dunn said they are planning a number of fundraisers which will take place throughout the year. The list of events will be announced before the teenager's funeral which will be held on Monday, April 11, at 3pm at Llanyrafon Methodist Church in Cwmbran.

Fundraising events include a ball and gin tasting session.

Ms Dunn said: "Emily wasn't big on being sponsored for something she wanted people to have an experience. She wanted people to go along to events to have some fun and raise some money. Raising money was more of a side-line than the focus.

"People have been fantastic in wanting to help - we're just sorting through everything now."
