A CWMBRAN-based fitness instructor has helped boost donations for an ailing animal shelter in a retro-themed aerobics class.

The community animal sanctuary, All Creatures Great and Small, announced it may have to close in three months unless it receives monetary donations.

Olivia Sweeney, owner of Olivia Sweeney Fitness, is a long-time supporter of the charity and held the eighties-themed aerobics class at the Woodland Road and Sports Social Club on Saturday.

Around 25 people turned out for the event and although the money raised has not been counted, Ms Sweeney was thrilled with the “significant contributions.”

She said: “I just think it is an amazing charity and what they do with animals and re-homing is amazing. It would be a sad thing if they close.

“My grandfather lives opposite the shelter and I have many fond memories of visiting their various events, so when I heard they needed urgent support I decided to hold the event," she added.

The 24-year-old from New Inn has raised money for the sanctuary before, helping to muster £300 at a Christmas Zumba-thon last year.

All Creatures Great and Small also held their own event on the same day, inviting people to their tabletop horse tack market selling various equine supplies.

The charity's admin assistant, Gaby Shellard, said: “In the past we would run all of our own fundraisers but people like Olivia have allowed us to host multiple events on the same day.

“The support we have received from Olivia and others has been amazing and we’re really grateful.”
