FOR most teenagers, passing their driving test is a proud moment.

But for 18-year-old Josh Peake it was extra special.

On passing his test he became the sixth generation of Peakes to become a driving force in the family business Peakes Coaches, which has been on the road since the 1880s.

The business was handed down to current owner Ian Peake by his father Edmund Isaac Peake.

Also working in the firm is Josh's proud Dad Jason, 42, who says he expects the company to carry on for future generations within the family.

He said: “I’m very proud to be involved in the running of such a tradition in Pontypool.

“I’m also extremely proud of Josh passing his test as I trained him. I hope the company will continue for future generations.”

The company grew from just three coaches to more than 45 through the years, taking over Town and Country Bus and Ace and Ellis Travel in recent times.

Josh, 18, says he has been interested in the business since he was a child, and cannot wait to be part of the team behind Peakes Coaches.

He said: “When I was a young boy, I always wanted to become a driver.

“I used to come to the yard and help clean the buses when I was six years old, and any chance that I had I would go with my father on trips around the UK and abroad.

“I love being part of the business and I have a lot to live up to now I’ve passed my test.”

The company have invested more £2 million in the last five years, having a new coach on the road each year since 2014.

Josh says he plans on taking over the business one day with some help from his family and carrying on its values.

He will take to the road on one of the family’s coaches for the first time this week.

“It feels a bit daunting but I’m sure I will enjoy what I have looked forward to for many years," he added.
