A PUPIL from Blaenavon Heritage School has won a competition to have her poster design displayed at this weekend’s World Heritage Day.

Eleven year-old Kodi Watchen was announced as the winner by the Blaenavon World Heritage Committee on Friday and presented with a framed copy of her winning entry.

Chairman of the committee, Gareth Davies, said: “She was very happy and had a lovely smile when we announced her as the winner at the school’s assembly.

“She seemed to really appreciate how much effort everyone had put in which was nice. All of our entrants seem to really catch Blaenavon or Welsh national culture really well.”

The design was turned into a poster by Nick Horler from local shop Artie Craftie and Blaenavon Town Council printed and distributed it to local shops in the run up to this weekend.

Mayor of Blaenavon Town Council, Alan Jones, said: “The children all came up with some fantastic ideas. Kodi’s design really captured the essence of the town and it will look fantastic.

“Thank you to the World Heritage Committee for running this competition and Artie Craftie for bringing the design to life.”

World Heritage Day takes place Saturday, June 25 from 11am and includes a fun fair, live music, and food craft stalls.

The Heritage Costume Parade starts at 1pm from the top of Broad Street and this year’s theme is ‘‘Blaenavon Then and Now’, celebrating the town’s industrial past and what makes it unique today.
