RECENT noise by Torfaen residents for a local Euro 2016 fanzone continue to go ignored.

With Wales playing Portugal in the semi-final tonight, many residents from Cwmbran, Blaenavon and Pontypool have been wondering where they can go to watch the action.

Both Cwmbran Stadium and Pontypool Park have been two places that have been mentioned as perfect locations so that people wouldn’t have to travel to Cardiff or Newport to enjoy the game

Business development manager Angharad Collins of Torfaen Leisure Trust, which runs Cwmbran Stadium, said: “It has been mentioned but we would rather leave it up to the professionals in Newport and Cardiff.

“It is not possible to have it outside on the 3G pitch as regulations mean you have to have the correct footwear, not stilettos or heels.

"Security is another issue, it would be very hard for us to manage as this stage.”

Ms Collins added: “We would have had to been a lot more prepared and I know the people at Rodney Parade have had to jump through hoops.

“Having a zone on Wednesday would clash with over 150 sporting activities we run, are our focus is providing that service for peoples fitness. For me I think Pontypool Park would be a fantastic venue in Torfaen and I don’t know why the council haven’t considered it.”

Last Friday, Newport’s Rodney Parade was open for fans and Cardiff has been suffering from over-capacity leading to the capital’s 6,000 capacity Cooper’s Field being upgraded for the Principality’s 20,000 seater stadium and yet many people have still been left disheartened without a ticket.

Mike Johnstone, of Cwmbran Community Council, said: “It would be nice to have an area for the fans with a screen. It’s coming to be important now as no one thought we would go this far. There has been an upsurge in interest and it’s something that needs to be looked into in future.

“Some people don’t want to go too far or to the big crowds in Cardiff. Pontypool Park and Cwmbran’s rugby ground are two places Torfaen council should look at.”

A Torfaen council spokesman said: "For resident’s seeking the fanzone experience, we would recommend the Rodney Parade fanzone in Newport.

"If resident’s are looking to soak up the atmosphere but stay protected from the elements, we would encourage they support the numerous local pubs and clubs showing the game on large screens and free of charge."
