BLAENAVON Ironworks was the site of an unusual wedding proposal, with what appeared to be a German Army soldier down on one knee.

The proposal took place during a World War Two re-enactment, between two of the enthusiasts taking part.

Tom Sweet, 21, got down on one knee to propose to his 19-year-old girlfriend Marcela Montoya while the two were dressed in authentic 1940s German uniforms.

The couple had travelled down from Aberystwyth for the two-day 'Defence of Blaenavon' reenactment last week, which saw several historical groups from across Wales attend.

Mr Sweet, who wore the uniform of a German Army soldier, said that only a select few, including his father who was also present at the reenactment, knew about his proposal plans.

"We were all lined up at the end of the battle and they were calling each group forward," said Mr Sweet.

"When Marcela's group were called out, I stepped forward and told them what I was doing and got down on one knee."

"It was nerve-wracking for me as she didn't say 'yes' straight away, I think she was just in shock!"

Mr Sweet, who was born in Plymouth before moving to Wales when he was young, has been involved in re-enactments for four years after a friend suggested that he join a group.

He believes that the process of re-enactment helps people gain a better understanding of history rather than "consuming it" through books.

Wendy Sidney, who organised the show with her husband, said that it was the first proposal at a reenactment that she had seen.

"I'd heard of weddings or similar ceremonies at re-enactments but never a proposal," said Mrs Sidney.

"It was a well kept secret and it was just a wonderful surprise to everyone, especially the girl. The crowd cheered and many a tear was shed."

Mrs Sidney, a member of South Wales Borderers reenactment group, said that the proposal helped to top off a 'hugely successful' weekend.

The Defence of Blaenavon raised £771 for the Blaenavon Royal British Legion, surpassing the amount raised at last year's event.
