FOR many traders in Torfaen, forging a successful business demands commitment, ingenuity and sometimes, a personal touch.

For former Pontypool Indoor Market florist, Sally Dixon – who launched a new business this week – her latest venture is extra special, paying tribute to a special bond that ties her family together.

When Lowri Mary Edwards arrived into the world last month, she shared the same birthday as not only her mother Emma Watkins but also her grandmother, Ms Dixon.

With three generations of woman born on October 12, Ms Dixon’s new business ‘Flowri’ pays tribute to the family’s new member and combines her two passions – family and floristry.

On Monday, November 14, the trader opened the shop at the Log Cabin in Folly View, Penygarn, in a ceremony attended by Torfaen’s mayor, Cllr Veronica Crick.

The 41-year-old grandmother’s migration from the Pontypool’s high street was partly motivated by several issues, which she believes, still hinder the town’s high street.

From business rates and rent overheads, to lack of city centre parking and privately owned derelict buildings, she believes changes need to happen to return the high streets to their former glory.

“I'm in the position now where my shop does not rely on footfall, which is one of the major problems affecting Pontypool market,” she said.

“I’m not paying a third as much rent on overheads and the opportunity to expand online is so much better. I do use social media to draw people into my shop for that face to face service.”

She added: “People still get excited for the Wednesday market in Pontypool as it is cheap and cheerful and brings something into the town that is familiar.

“I would love to go back but the only way that will happen will be if the business rates and overheads change and if the people, who own some buildings repair them.

“What is going to make a difference for Pontypool is investment. I do believe that the traders do their bit to try and entice more people but they have no power to change things like this.

“If we had all the shops that Cwmbran has had, we wouldn’t be having this conversation”.
