A TEENAGE volunteer who helps provide bilingual workshops on sexual health matters has won an award in recognition of his dedication.

Ryan Crewe-Rees, 18, from Varteg has supported the Gwent-wide and Big Lottery Fund-funded project Sex Matters Too, and claimed a Diana Award earlier this month.

He undertook training and delivered sessions in English and Welsh, as well as holding recruitment assemblies at his school – Pontypool’s Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw – in Welsh.

Mr Crewe-Rees, who joined the project in 2015, said: “To win this award means so much in terms of knowing that the work I have done has impacted young people in a positive way.

“I'd like to thank everybody involved on the project for giving me this opportunity.”

He has also become a hub coordinator on the project to support other young people to volunteer and deliver workshops across Torfaen.

The Diana Award is given to compassionate and courageous young people who share a deep sense of social responsibility.

The award organisers seek to honour young people for their actions because they believe that this encouragement leads young people to not only reach their full potential, but also to feel confident in their ability to bring about positive change.

Cara Battrick, a project co-ordinator from Sex Matters Too, said: “Ryan has been an exceptional volunteer for Volunteering Matters on the Sex Matters Too project.

“He has gone above and beyond to support his peers on the project and be an inspiration to others.”

Sianne Morgan, a Volunteering Matters youth development manager for Wales, said: “Ryan has shown passion and commitment in supporting other young people to achieve their potential in the community.”
