PUPILS from a Pontypool secondary school are preparing to blow audiences away with their latest school production.

St Alban’s RC High School will be performing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat from today until Friday. The production, which will see pupils aged between 14 and 18 taking part, will be set against the 1960s/70s backdrop in which it was composed and written by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Tim Rice.

Cayte McCarthy, a drama teacher involved in the production, said: “Last year the school performed Jesus Christ Superstar so it seemed quite fitting to do the next production Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote. Hannah Todd, our head of drama, decided to set it at the time it was written in the late 60s and early 70s so it’ll be very psychedelic.

“The students have absolutely loved dressing up in the ‘flower power’ clothing, they’ve found all of it so much fun to do.”

The production will be one of two that St Alban’s will host this year, with the school’s younger pupils being involved in the next show. The school’s sixth form students have been heavily involved in the project, with some being assessed on their work as part of their BTEC studies.

All of the production’s marketing, including posters and photography, and the choreography were all put together by students from Years 12 and 13.

“The students have really led by example and they’ve been so integral to everything that we do,” said Mrs McCarthy.

“We have a lot of them going on to study drama and music at university so they will have a lot of experience going forward.”

Mrs McCarthy also praised the “fantastic” support from the students’ families for the school’s previous productions, adding that former students have also returned to support them. Admission costs £5; tickets are still available for tonight and Thursday night.
