NOMINATIONS are coming in from across the region for our Gwent’s Best Mum competition.

Following the success of last year’s competition, we are once again looking for Gwent’s Best Mum. To enter, all you need to do is let us know why your mum deserves to win the title.

We have read tales of amazing mothers from across the region who are all in the running for this year’s prize.

Alison Smith, of Pontypool, nominated her mum Una because of everything she does for her and the rest of the family. Miss Smith says that she, her two sisters and brother appreciate everything their mother does for them.

She says that the family had a tough time when their father David was diagnosed with cancer.

She said: “We have always been a close family. When dad was sick mum gave up everything for him.

“He was bed bound and wanted to spend his last days at home, so she couldn’t really go anywhere. She was strong for all of us, she always has been the rock of the family.”

The death of their father in 2013 hit the family hard, especially as Miss Smith and her sister had young babies and they knew their father wouldn’t be a part of his grandchildren’s lives. Mrs Smith remained strong for her family and was always there when they needed her.

“Mum was great for everybody. She spent time with my sister who lives in Devon and then spent time with all of us. We would talk, look though old pictures, go out for the day and remember things he used to do with us.”

Following the death of her husband Mrs Smith, who lives in Cwmbran, didn’t venture out too far. But then she joined the Tenovus choir and her life was filled with music and new friends.

Miss Smith says her mother is an inspiration and she thanks her for doing so much for her. “She is always there for me and I was able to go back to work because of mum’s help. As a single mum she gives me a break and lets me have some time for me.

“I wouldn’t be half the person I am without her. She is the most selfless person I know, she will do anything for anyone. My mum is the most amazing woman in the world.”

The winning mum will receive a prize of a champagne afternoon tea for four people at the five-star Celtic Manor Resort. They will enjoy a glass of bubbly on arrival before tucking in to a feast of finger sandwiches, cakes, tarts, and scones accompanied by a range of speciality tea or coffee.
