FORMER staff from a Cwmbran DVD manufacturer gathered this weekend to mark the 10th anniversary of the plant’s closure.

Technicolor – which once employed more than 300 people and specialised in DVD and CD replication – closed its site in Llantarnam in 2007.

The company, which had offices worldwide, operated in Cwmbran under several names, including Nimbus, Technicolor and Thomson.

The Cwmbran operation was originally founded by Nimbus, a Welsh pioneer of CD technology.

Richard Donovan, who worked at the plant, said he arranged the reunion on Saturday at the Upper Cock pub, in Cwmbran, to mark the 10-year anniversary of the plant’s closure.

The 62-year-old former injection moulding technician started at the plant in 1987 and was involved in decommissioning its equipment.

He said: “I worked at the plant when it was Nimbus which later became Technicolor.

“Considering this year is the 10th anniversary since the plant closed I thought it would be best to have a reunion.

“Whenever I bump into old colleagues we are always saying that we need a good catch-up. So this time I decided to do something.”

About 50 people attended the reunion which included live music entertainment from duo The Spokes. Guests also donated to a St David’s Hospice collection and raised £90 for the hospice charity.

Mr Donovan described the night as a “success” and hopes to make the reunion an annual event and to attract more staff.

“Unfortunately a lot of colleagues have passed away so we thought we should hold this sooner rather than later,” he added.

“It couldn’t have been better and I was chuffed that people were rekindling friendships after so many years. It was really successful and I would like to thank everyone who turned up to make it a success.”
