PRIMARY schools across Torfaen renewed old rivalries during a community football tournament hosted by Cwmbran Shopping and Gwent Police, after a devastating fire nearly cancelled the whole event.

More than 160 children from 17 schools took part in the tournament, now in its fifth year, earlier this month.

The event was due to be held at The Football Factory on Tuesday, April 4, but the building at the Avondale Industrial Estate was damaged by a fire last month.

Luckily a new venue was found and the event took place as planned at Cwmbran Stadium.

George Street Primary School was victorious after beating off tough competition from Ysgol Cwmbran.

Cwmbran Shopping’s security manager and event organiser Neil Eley said: “We were delighted to host the tournament again this year and to see all the youngsters showcasing the amazing talent Torfaen has to offer.

“Community is incredibly important to us here at Cwmbran Shopping and we were devastated to hear about the fire at the Football Factory last month.

“Thankfully, due to the hard work of everyone involved a new venue was found and the event could go ahead.

“We are looking forward to hosting the tournament again next year and welcoming even more children from across the area.”
