A GWENT scooter club has helped to raise nearly £3,000 for a mental health charity.

For the fourth year in a row, members of the Cwmbran All-Stars Scooter Club have chosen one or two charitable causes, this year they have selected Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Dave Colbourne and Peter Fryer, the club’s lottery licence holders, said the cause was picked as it was close to the hearts of its members.

“We pick a charity each year and it is usually the case that somebody within the club will have a connection to it,” said Mr Colbourne.

“This is the fourth time that we’ve done this.

“We’ve counted all the money raised and it comes to £2,850, which is the most that we’ve ever raised.

“We have members within the scooter fraternity who have mental health issues themselves or have family who do,” he added.

Members from other scooter clubs across South Wales joined the Cwmbran group for the cheque presentation at Newport’s Wildcat Scooters, who donated a bike for a raffle.

“The mental health charities are receiving such small levels of funding that we therefore try and do everything that we can to help them,” said Mr Fryer.

“Next year, we will be helping Mind as well.

“Year upon year, we have managed to raise more which is great for us.”
